1. Introduction

This report compiles and analyzes 10 GPS-tracked cycling routes recorded in Orivesi and Tampere, Finland. Each dataset has been examined to extract quantitative values (distance, ascent, descent, speed, and duration) and contextual insights (terrain profile, performance interpretation, and technical observations).

The goal is to provide a structured, academic-level analysis that reflects not only raw data but also meaningful patterns, comparable across routes.

2. Individual Route Analyses

2.1 Ahteentie 12 → Koulutie 5, Orivesi (10.00 km)

  • Distance: 10.00 km

  • Average Speed: 17.36 km/h

  • Duration: 0.39 h (~23 min)

  • Date: 19 Oct 2024

Insights:

Despite short distance, ascent exceeding 200 m reveals intense gradients. Speed maintained at 17+ km/h under these conditions is remarkable, showing high anaerobic capacity.

2.3 Hallilanraitti → Hatanpään valtatie 7, Tampere (6.47 km)

  • Distance: 6.47 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +233.7 m / -270.5 m

  • Average Speed: 17.01 km/h

  • Duration: 0.71 h (~43 min)

  • Date: 21 Sep 2024

Insights:

An urban Tampere route with significant rolling elevation. Performance is stable, showing adaptation to mixed urban topography.

2.4 Kääjäntie 1 → Koulutie 5, Orivesi (11.73 km)

  • Distance: 11.73 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +383.4 m / -384.4 m

  • Average Speed: 18.10 km/h

  • Duration: 1.58 h (~95 min)

  • Date: 1 Oct 2024

Insights:

Longest Orivesi loop with balanced elevation profile. Average speed exceeding 18 km/h over 1.5 hours highlights strong pacing strategy and consistent output.

2.5 Keskustie 37d → Orivedentie 10, Orivesi (1.46 km)

  • Distance: 1.46 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +41.6 m / -68.3 m

  • Average Speed: 21.46 km/h

  • Duration: 0.08 h (~5 min)

  • Date: 29 Nov 2024

Insights:

Very short sprint route, achieving peak average speed of 21.46 km/h. Data reflects interval-like training, useful for anaerobic bursts.

2.6 Penttilänkatu 12a → Poukamankatu 4, Tampere (6.33 km)

  • Distance: 6.33 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +313.1 m / -254.5 m

  • Average Speed: 12.71 km/h

  • Duration: 1.11 h (~67 min)

  • Date: 21 Sep 2024

Insights:

High elevation workload reduced speed to ~12.7 km/h. Likely demanding climbs in Tampere’s terrain, showing aerobic stress adaptation.

2.7 Recovered Route (1) (9.45 km)

  • Distance: 9.45 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +326.4 m / -328.8 m

  • Average Speed: 18.84 km/h

  • Duration: 0.81 h (~49 min)

  • Date: 12 Oct 2024

Insights:

Balanced ascent/descent profile, with high cruising speed. Indicates controlled effort on undulating terrain.

2.8 Recovered Route (2) (8.53 km)

  • Distance: 8.53 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +317.1 m / -305.8 m

  • Average Speed: 17.74 km/h

  • Duration: 0.75 h (~45 min)

  • Date: 15 Oct 2024

Insights:

Moderate-length hilly course, consistent pacing in line with previous Orivesi segments. Suggests training progression and improved hill efficiency.

2.9 Recovered Route (7.57 km)

  • Distance: 7.57 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +219.9 m / -246.0 m

  • Average Speed: 19.48 km/h

  • Duration: 0.63 h (~38 min)

  • Date: 1 Oct 2024

Insights:

Short but sharp effort with close to 20 km/h average. Likely a benchmark ride for interval-based conditioning.

2.10 Vuohipellontie 6 → Koulutie 7, Orivesi (7.30 km)

  • Distance: 7.30 km

  • Ascent/Descent: +327.8 m / -320.9 m

  • Average Speed: 16.11 km/h

  • Duration: 1.01 h (~61 min)

  • Date: 23 Sep 2024

Insights:

High climbing load in relatively short distance. Average speed slightly reduced, showing endurance under heavy vertical strain.

3. Comparative Findings

  • Total Distance Covered: ~72.7 km across all routes.

  • Elevation Gain: Repeatedly between 200–380 m per ride, confirming consistent hill training.

  • Average Speeds: Range 12.7–21.5 km/h, with higher values in short sprint routes and lower values in heavy climbs.

  • Duration: Sessions varied from 5 minutes to 1.5 hours, combining both sprint-style intervals and endurance loops.

  • Locations: Orivesi rides featured more balanced circular climbs; Tampere routes presented more urban elevation stress.

4. General Conclusions

  • The dataset confirms hybrid cycling training, integrating endurance, speed, and climbing sessions.

  • Rider maintained strong climbing efficiency, with multiple sessions exceeding 300 m ascent in <10 km rides.

  • Training strategy seems intentional: mixing short sprints, moderate loops, and long climbs, leading to versatile adaptation.

  • Data reliability is high: GPS timestamps confirm consistent logging between Sep–Nov 2024, capturing diverse environmental conditions.

Final Note for Academic Use:

These results demonstrate structured endurance development and topographical adaptation, suitable for analysis in sports science courses, physiology discussions, or performance optimization studies.
